Processional

Program Note

By Michael Markowski

Processional was composed specifically to celebrate the wedding of my friend, Jason Noble, and his partner, Gino Carolini. When I asked Jason what sort of vibe they wanted to walk down the aisle to, he responded with, “You know I want a Queeenly coronation.” So with that, I started learning more about organ registrations and began composing some ideas while watching YouTube videos of royal weddings with the volume turned down. Jason had also mentioned that his friend and Boston Symphony trumpet player, Michael Martin, was planning on attending the wedding. I asked Jason if we could consider a piece for organ and trumpet to really accentuate the coronation flavor that he wanted, and to our delight, Michael agreed. Congratulations, Jason and Gino!

Processional premiered on September 23, 2023 at St. Paul’s Chapel on the campus of Columbia University. Janet Yieh played the organ and Michael Martin played the C Trumpet and B-flat Piccolo Trumpet. In 2025, the piece was orchestrated for brass ensemble and percussion.
