Why are programs important?

Submitting your concert program is a really easy and important way you can help support any composer (not just me!). When you send a composer a copy of your program, he or she can then submit that program to their Performing Rights Organization (like ASCAP or BMI). These organizations then collect performance royalties on behalf of composers and publishers. If your concert has been officially licensed, as most university and community concerts are (however, concerts for K-12 schools are exempt from licensing), then the composer will receive a modest performing rights royalty. This royalty might not be more than $10 or $15 or it might not be counted at all, but every little bit helps when you're a creative person or a musician who depends on many different sources of income.
